My Project

I am a special education teacher that works with middle school aged students that have intellectual and/or emotional disabilities. Many of my students struggle with food insecurity and come to school hungry as there is not enough food to eat in the home. On occasion, some of my students have arrived too late to receive the school issued breakfast and must go hungry until the middle of the school day when lunch is served. 85% of my students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program, but the servings are not large enough to fill my teenage boys as they receive the same portions as elementary school students. Because of this, several of my students ask for food beyond what the school provides.

Lack of sufficient food in quantity and/or quality can result in depression, anxiety, and stress.

Students who have not had access to an adequate amount of food also tend to experience headaches, are lethargic, and have difficulty concentrating; all of which negatively impact their learning. Meeting the basic needs of my students is vital to helping them regulate their emotions and behavior. With your support of this project, I will be able to supply my students with nutritious snacks throughout the day. In addition, I will be able to supplement the school breakfast and lunch so their meals are filling. By combating food insecurity in my classroom, we can ensure that hunger is not a barrier when it comes to learning.
