My Students
"Young children are not good sitters. They are hungry for stimulation. Children learn best when they are encouraged to explore, interact, create, and play" (Thompkins, 1991).
The students in my pre-k classes are three, four and five year olds that have been screened and found "at risk" for development in either cognitive, language or motor areas.
Developing cognitive skills is one of the key components to school success! Prekindergarten classrooms must provide opportunities for children to engage in exploration and offer students many ways to experience success.
My Project
My students will be able to experience successful math and cognitive experiences by providing them with hands-on manipulatives such as "Following Directions Building Set" with the color coded and easy to follow instruction cards and electric screwdriver and shape pieces. Also, by providing my students with the magnetic "Turn and Learn Gears" they will be able to experiment with shape movement. The "Peg-A-Picture Board" set, "Rainbow Design Blocks", "Log Builders", and "Light Table Learning Materials" will allow my students much open-ended learning opportunities and possibilities of quantity, length, space, and height development. Not only will my student experience these mathematical experiences, but they will be able to identify, count and sort enticing healthy food magnets with the standing magnet center. These materials will help my students build a deeper mathematical understanding and develop a good attitude towards math and healthy foods!
Providing my classroom with these many manipulatives will help to provide my students with materials they need for active learning opportunities.
Manipulatives help students to be problem solvers and flexible thinkers who can apply mathematical ideas to a many situations and learn about healthy foods and being active at the same time!
