Hungry For Learning! Using YA Lit In The Classroom

My students need a classroom set of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins; they also need a few copies of Catching Fire and Mockingjay and audio copies of each.

My Students

Budgets are a big problem. There simply isn't enough money to go around. Many of the books being taught are out of date and irrelevant, but there isn't enough money to replace them. In order to get students interested in reading, we need to introduce more up to date, and relevant texts.

Many of the students I teach are just now being introduced to a good book.

They do not always come from families that value education and they lack the money to buy the newest books and libraries often have long waiting lists. They turn to me often to check out books as our school lacks a proper library. Just like with most schools, money is a tremendous obstacle to overcome.

My Project

Using The Hunger Games in class will help to instill a love of learning and reading. It is the first book in an extremely popular trilogy. Reading the first book will only encourage them to keep reading. The classics are wonderful to teach, but many of my students simply don't "get it." This book is going to be added to the 8th grade curriculum in an attempt to get students interested in reading at a younger age. It will also be taught at the 12th grade level for a few years (until the 8th graders are seniors). We must encourage reading at a younger age and begin to build their interest. I have also requested copies of the other two books in the trilogy to have on hand for when the students finish The Hunger Games. I am sure they will want to continue the series! I have also requested the audio CDs of each book for those who struggle with reading.

They are starting to get excited to read and as their teacher, it is my job to keep that interest going. Last year, I introduced two new YA books into my curriculum and the students loved them! I want to add more YA books into our curriculum to keep up the momentum. I tell my students often that literacy is knowledge and knowledge is power. An inspiring message for many who feel stuck in their lives.
