Hungry for Hunger Games

My students need a class set of the novel Hunger Games, which is what they WANT to read, so they can explore and learn to love the world of literature.

My Students

Survival, mystery, history, foreign lands, intrigue, heroes - these are only a few of the adventures my students can experience without leaving the city. Together, we can begin the journey with them by sharing in the excitement,as they learn reading is not a chore, but an adventure of a lifetime!

My middle school students are diverse in language, culture, academic levels, and social needs.

Albeit this is the sounding cry of most American public schools today, my students are unique in creating a strong, unifying school culture with all their collective strengths despite their challenges. They strive to be “warriors” in academics, behavior, and social interactions on campus. While our students rise above challenges such as homes without Internet, books, electricity, stable familial environments, or even adequate nutrition, they still lack valuable educational resources. I believe all my students want to learn, and will, as they have the right to succeed as well as have the educational tools to prepare them for high school and beyond. However, my students still struggle with an absence of needed resources such as technology and current literature to keep up with their literary appetites, and make literary connections with their classes, themselves, and the world.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of the novel Hunger Games. Students will share their own knowledge and skills through exploring and analyzing their connections, questions, and insights of this book, building essential academic skills through reading highly motivating literature and having discussions through their own lens and experience. My students are excited to examine the theme of survival in this book. Having a small number of novels sets limits the possibility they will experience the depth of the theme, so that is why I am requesting a class set. Each teacher in our team of 5 worked together to create a project and to select 1 survival novel to help develop the theme through a variety of perspectives while addressing student interest and the varying reading abilities across the sixth grade. We will rotate the novels between classes, while embracing the opportunity to create exciting activities to enrich the experience. They will have the opportunity to compare and contrast the concept of survival in multiple settings, with different protagonists while tackling a variety of conflicts.

Overall, the ultimate goal is to design and provide students with an experience that will potentially be the catalyst for developing the lasting love of reading or at the very least, the opportunity for our students to have the foundational skills to become lifelong consumers of literature.

This project will not only serve the near 300 sixth graders in our school, but this captivating book will also be shared with our seventh and eighth grade classrooms, helping us to build rigorous literature circles.
