This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the librarian at a high poverty elementary school. Continuous budget cuts in education tend to be taken from libraries, music, P.E., and the arts first. The students in our school library have been directly effected as our school library has been unable to make updates as necessary.

Students these days are so consumed by visual stimulus.

Television and video games have taken away from reading as a form of entertainment. Fortunately, students are not relying on these types of entertainment while at school eight hours a day, they must rely on books. This seems like a "no other choice" type of option however, if students are not provided with interesting book options with pretty, updated covers and topics they are instantly uninterested and tend to stare at pages, rather than read them. As the librarian I see daily what books students check out, and our students really enjoy the books in the The 39 Clues, Shadow Children, and the Missing series. I noticed that all of these books have some sort of scientific element, so what better way to inspire scientific inquiry than through fun literature?

My Project

DonorsChoose.org and generous donors have made a huge difference in the perception students have when it comes to reading. I receive requests for certain books all the time and am excited to be requesting the Hunger Games, the newest editions to other book series, and best selling picture books on behalf of our eager readers. What I enjoy seeing is the continuous interest in books that present a new and exciting topic for scientific inquiry. Not only will this project provide high interest books, but through the integration of science topics students will also have an established purpose for their reading which will assist with reading comprehension.

This project will enrich the lives of students who may have otherwise overlooked the joy of reading.

Please join in our efforts to provide students with up to date, high interest reading in a time when literacy and sciences are more important than ever. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.
