My Students
Over 90% of our students receive a free or reduced lunch.
Over 90% of our students are of an ethnic minority.
We are striving for 90% of our students to score Advanced or Proficient on the state test. We are making significant strides toward that.
Last year, the students performed so well on their state test, our school was named the County's Most Improved Middle School.
Over 82% of our students are classified as English Learners. However, as they continue to develop their English skills they will be better equipped as a bilingual speaker in this globalized world. Our students amaze me with their hard work ethic and sense of resiliency amidst socioeconomic challenges.
They are great kids that make teaching worthwhile.
My Project
With a majority of our students classified as English Learners, each teacher begins the morning leading a book club. In this 45 minute class, we aim to develop English language skills through reading.
The Hunger Games, is a best selling novel that features teenagers as the hero and heroine. It incorporates not only thrilling events, but also poses ethical questions for kids to think about. This book could serve as a great way for students to get hooked on reading and develop their English Language skills.
If we get our project funded, we would read this book as a class and have class discussions about major topics in the book.
Once we are finished, we will pass it on to other classes for them to read and benefit from.
Thank you for your time in reading and considering our project.
