My Students
My students are artists who think about the world and their learning in an abstract way. They come from diverse backgrounds and are all very proud to go to our school, which serves as their home away from home.
My classes are mixed levels, and every student has a particular talent that allows them to shine in and out of the classroom.
They all are committed to various art forms and look for ways to incorporate themes and ideas from our class into their work.
My Project
I am requesting The Hungry Monks, a local music collective, to visit my tenth-grade classroom to teach and perform Elizabethan music for two days during our Othello unit. Students will learn how the music of the time period would have enhanced the play.
In almost every Shakespearean play a character sings a song, and there are hidden meanings within the vocabulary.
Hazel Ketchum, co-owner of Hungry Monk Music, is an expert in this field. She visited last spring during our Hamlet unit, and by the end of the class period students were singing along with her. They said the experience was one of the most memorable of the year.
Hazel holds degrees in Classical Guitar Performance from the University of Southern California. She has taught music in SC public and private schools, at the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, and has been Artist-in-Residence at the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Center in Ohio, among many other teaching posts. Hazel is a certified Music For Young Children teacher and is an active performer as a soloist and with her group The Hungry Monks.
