Hungry Children

My students need snacks. Kids need to eat snacks to help them grow properly and to fill any nutritional gaps, snacks are an important part of your child's day.

My Students

My children are extremely poor.

My school is in a low socioeconomic area.

My children are in the high-poverty living area and they are at high risk of behavior. It makes me sad when parents tell me they have no money for food. What is even sadder is when that child has to look at me and tell me "my mommy said she can't bring in a snack every day, she's not rich". These are children that are five years old, knowing they are poor this should not be happening. Why is this happening to precious children?

Being a second-year teacher is very hard. I have to buy so many snacks every day for my classroom on a daily basis. I can not afford to buy a snack for 19 children every day. I have not received my teacher debit card, nor have I received my badge to go to the Gift For Teaching to receive the free items, such as snacks. I feel like all these children have is me. I do ask parents to help me, but no response. I do write a note to the parents but still, no response.

My Project

Snacking is important for children because they have smaller stomachs than adults and cannot necessarily eat enough to stay full in one meal or sitting. They should be able to snack every three to four hours over the course of the day. Snacking throughout the day not only ensures kids stay full, it also helps them learn healthy eating habits, like eating appropriate amounts and only when they're hungry. Small, healthy snacks throughout the day prevent patterns of boredom eating or eating based on emotional factors.

Food is turned into glucose in the body.

Glucose gives your child’s body and brains the energy he needs to run just like gas gives a car the fuel it needs to go. In between meals, glucose levels fall. This can negatively affect your child’s mood, behavior, and brain function. A snack at the right time between meals prevents major hunger pangs and gives your child an energy boost to keep him studying and playing hard at school.
