This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“Of all the diversions of life, there is none so proper to fill up its empty spaces as the reading of useful and entertaining authors.” –Joseph Addison
My students need a high interest novel to engage them. British Literature can be very discouraging for some students.
My students come from very impoverished backgrounds.
My school is 99% free and reduced lunch. Many of them are new to the country and have experienced hardships in their country. They know the evils of society and I feel that they will be able to relate to the dystopian novel.
My Project
I am requesting 50 copies of the novel Hunger Games in order to create a Multi-Genre Paper/Portfolio: My students will create different pieces of literature based on the text. This portfolio will combine creative writing with technical writing. Students will create character resumes, letters to the author, poetry, character diary entries, songs, and continuations of the story. In addition, students will be allowed to choose different aspects of the mentor texts 1984 to create more entries for their scrapbooks.
My students need fifty copies so that they will each have a copy during class to read and the students can read at home if they check it out with the teacher. The students will present their projects and display them in the media center.
This project is important because students need to read texts that they can relate to or find interesting.
The Hunger Games is the perfect novel because it engages students. I feel this novel will inspire kids and encourage them to read.
