This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Technology is particularly useful in a special education classroom because the variety of students and their differing learning needs can be met in order to make education successful for them. These students, like all, are drawn to technology and they are motivated to learn with its' assistance.

We are a Title 1 middle school, which means we receive federal funds to help improve academic achievement of disadvantaged kids.

Due to the location of the school, the majority of students do not have access to technology in their households. They are struggling to have their basic needs met. The students in my special education Language Arts class are all 8th graders and have disabilities that include Specific Learning Disabled, Autism, Dyslexia, and Emotionally Disturbance. There are currently 34 students that would be positively impacted by the technology this DonorsChoose.org project enables. However, future years of students will also have access to it. With patience and technology, my students are able to make gains in their reading and writing skills. Also, the access to technology enables them to become empowered learners. It is incredible to watch their self-esteem rise as they understand a grade-level text or learn a new iPad application.

My Project

In response to the Common Core Curriculum standards addressing that special education students need to engage in grade-level texts and to instill a love of reading, students will read the Hunger Games Trilogy through the Bookshare program and AudioDream Application. This is completed by using the class set of iPads (ten total). Students will read the text (it is read to them and visually available to them) and they will use applications and programs on their iPads to interpret the text. The Toontastic Application allows students to create a story arc of the text, learn vocabulary through the Flashboard Application that helps them produce digital flashcards, make vocabulary BINGO sheets by utilizing the BINGO Sheet Maker Application, and produce and present an iMovie trailer which emphasize literary themes throughout the text. The teacher will also assist in helping students to answer thought-provoking comprehension questions through online quizzes and iPad applications.

I observe kids struggle with learning and ultimately lose confidence in their own reading and writing abilities on a daily basis.

Technology has established a way for them to access education and make meaningful gains! It is truly a blessing for those who struggle with motivation to keep learning, and it empowers them to become self-advocates for their own education. This project will provide access to a grade-level text that otherwise would not be possible for my students.
