Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am teaching 18 amazing 7th and 8th graders this year. All of my students are newcomers. Many of my students are from Venezuela, Ecuador, Columbia, Mexico and other Latin American countries. They have proven to be resilient and work tirelessly going above and beyond to learn and grow. They are learning to embrace the new language and culture while preserving their native tongue and traditions.
This year we are reading popular novels in their native language.
One of the novels students are most excited about this year is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. We are almost done with the first novel in the series and students are asking about the sequels. I am hoping to to be able to provide my students with copies of the sequels to the Hunger Games so they can continue to read about these exciting books. Students will continue to read these books in small groups. They will continue to learn more and discuss ideas about dystopian societies, themes, government, ideologies, develop language skills and profoundly expand their vocabulary.
