This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever read a book that you just couldn't out down? I have, and I want my students to experience that same exhilarating feeling. I want my students to feel their hearts skip a beat when the main character is challenged.
I asked my students what was the last book they read and it was "The Pearl", and it was read in class.
My next question was, "Who did not enjoy reading "The Pearl"? To my surprise the same hands stayed in the air. Every student felt that the classic novel that many love was boring. According to some there was not action, or other felt that the characters were "lame". While some of my female students do enjoy reading outside of class many of the boys in class do not read outside of class.
Many of the students come from families where reading
In addition, because of the unbearable budget cuts, our library has suffered and new books are never ordered. So where can students be encouraged to read? In my classroom!
My Project
The Hunger Games is about a dystopia society in which survivors must fight each other to survive. The main activities in the unit will deal with society and the roles that people play in the society. However, I will also have students complete character studies and put themselves in the characters' shoes.
Additionally, I will be using literature circles and students will discuss the story and make educated opinions and predictions. For those students who finish early, they will be allowed to read the second installment of the series.
Overall, my students will not only learn about society and the roles in society, but also about the beauty of reading.
With the class set of "The Hunger Games" students will finally say "I couldn't put that book down" and mean it.
Students who never read will want to finish a series of books, and for some this will be the first book they ever read.
