This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In first grade we teach our students many strategies to solve their math equations. Two of the main strategies are using number lines and hundreds charts. Number lines help provide a mental strategy for addition and subtraction and research has shown that number lines are important because they promote good mental number sense and arithmetic strategies.
The benefits of the hundred chart functions much like a number line, but in a more condensed space that highlights place value and patterns.
It allows for more advanced 2-digit operations, which can become complex with manipulatives such as base-10 blocks.
This project will allow me to give my students their own hundreds charts and number lines that they can have on their desk for easier access all year long.
