My Students

I teach a population that is highly diverse and majority low income. My students are fiercely protective of their friends, family and are socially justice minded individuals who are very attuned to issues of fairness and equality. My students are passionate, funny, beautiful, and thoughtful young humans who represent a variety of experiences.

I believe their education is a powerful tool they can use to change the world, but they face many daily challenges both inside and outside of the classroom.

Sometimes they need support and tools to ensure their path to that education is equitable.

My Project

This year more than ever, students need engaging material to help them learn. We are managing academic needs, mental health concerns and social emotional gaps beyond anything we have ever seen and what is of utmost importance is ensuring that students are engaged in the material we are presenting.

Trevor Noah's memoir Born A Crime: Stories From A South African Childhood will help students learn more about the genre of literary non-fiction as well as connect to their own lives.

The text is rich with humor, heart and humility and offers so many opportunities for students to think critically about history, their own experiences and what defines their voice and their generation. In addition, as the host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah's life and work contains many additional engaging resources through video clips, other text excerpts and interviews. Reading non-fiction is one of the hardest academic skills for students to grasp and this text will help them do the work.
