Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a diverse, Title I high school located in New York, housed within a campus of many other schools. My students come from over 30 countries around the world -- Yemen, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, China, the Ivory Coast, and Haiti, to name a few. They also speak well over 30 different languages and they are at different levels of English language proficiency. Students learn English through their content area classes and there is a strong sense of mentorship with combined 9th and 10th grades.

My Project

My students will complete a community project in their English class, called "Humans of Brooklyn," inspired by Brandon Stanton's "Humans of New York." All 100 of my high school students are English language learners and in the beginning of the school year we will learn about writing captions for a visual, graphic novel they will read in class. At the end of the unit, we will study Stanton's "Humans of New York," and everyone will create their own post by choosing someone to interview and photograph. Students will use the copies of Stanton's book as models for the project and to help generate ideas. The five polaroid cameras with cases and film will be for student use within our school.

Students, just like in "Humans of New York," will use these cameras to take shots of their subjects.

Students may interview one another, a family member, or someone else important or interesting to them. These photos and captions will be displayed in our school. In essence, this project provides everything students need to tell our -- humans of Brooklyn -- stories.

"Humans of Brooklyn" exists at the intersection of journalism and literacy development. This project will help my English language learners practice many skills: interviewing, transcribing, writing, photography, and storytelling. Everyone has a story to tell, help my students to tell theirs!
