My Students

Imagine a class with no textbook. I have created a new elective for next year centered around the study of women and their issues. I read "Sold" by Patricia McCormick and realized my students needed to read it as well.

Our school is located in a small town in rural Michigan.

We are located in an impoverished area of the state and many of my students come from broken families. However, they are amazing young people who strive to break out of the cycle of poverty and I do everything I can to equip them with the necessary tools to be successful. Students are not exposed to many multicultural opportunities, so I am aiming to do this in my classroom. This class will be almost packed to capacity with young women and young men yearning for something different.

My Project

Although we will read statistics about human trafficking, "Sold" will make the statistics real for my students. The book is the story of a young girl sold into sex slavery by her father to cover his gambling debts. Unfortunately this happens on a much more common basis than we in the United States would like to believe, and I think it is important for our young people to know how lucky they are and to inspire them to want to change the world for the better.

The purchase of these books will greatly improve my ability to teach about human trafficking and the treatment of women in other parts of the world.

After reading them, I hope that my students will be inspired to help educate their peers about these and other human rights issues and perhaps join the fight to ensure that all people are treated humanely.
