Human Rights and World War II Narratives

My students need these books in order for me to teach them a unit on World War II. With this book, My Father Bleeds History, I will be able to expand the curriculum towards human rights and the holocaust.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine never having your identity represented in your school's curriculum. Imagine coming from a family whose first language is not English. Imagine being from a family of hardworking immigrants. Imagine being from an incredibly rich, vibrant and diverse community.

This fall, I will begin working as an English teacher at a community cooperative charter school in Richmond, California.

Richmond is the lowest performing large school district in California. I have the privilege of teaching bright and capable students, many of whom are English language learners. My students will be able to effectively write, read, and articulate their ideas not only in the classroom but outside of the classroom and within their communities as well.

My Project

For this project, I will be utilizing Maus as a text to shed light on another side of World War II for my students. In my ELA class, I aim at expanding students' empathy and understandings of a wide range of perspectives.

This text will not only allow students to see a wide range of perspective in a historically relevant, World War II context, but as a graphic novel, it will also allow my ELD students greater access to the understanding text.

This is imperative in my classroom, as almost half of my students are ELD.

Through this project, students will have a better understanding of the multiple forms of self-expression through literature. This unit will shift from the historical significance of WWII to the concept of human rights, and how human rights are played out in our world today.
