Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has a new library! Before this year, we did not have a central library but only books in the classrooms. Our principal ordered new furniture, new computers, and books. However, we need some 'fun' attractive stuffed animals (book characters) to warm it up for the young kids.
We are a PK-5th grade school and 99% Hispanic. 68% of our kids speak Spanish as their first language. Our library has books in Spanish and English. Our kids are enthusiastic readers, but don't have access to books except at school. This is the first library they have experienced.
The space is an old computer lab with tile floor. Three walls are lined with plain bookshelves and the fourth wall is windows looking out to the parking lot. I have tried to make the room cheery and inviting by: hanging book covers in mobiles from the ceilings, using a reading rug with some IKEA small furniture, and buying plants for the windowsill. But, the book shelves are very plain and bare. Our kids are ages 3 and up, so I have lots of young readers using the space. Since they can't reach past the first three shelves, and since we don't have very many books, the top shelves are empty.
Through DonorsChoose, I would like to buy stuffed animals to display with our books. The kids would LOVE it, and it would bring their attention to those books. The room would be friendly, warm, and cozy! We have such wonderful kids, and I want them to see the library as inviting and fun. They don't have very many toys at home, so anything extra is very appreciated!
