Hudson River Science Project

My students need water monitoring equipment (water sampler, oxygen meter, reference solution) to precisely measure the health of the nearby Hudson River.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Gastel's classroom raised $686

My Students

Our school is located on the Hudson River but most of our students never visit it. We want to change that. This project will involve the students in monitoring the health of the river ecosystem to help them design programs to improve the quality of the natural community around the school.

We are a Title I school that serves the entire city where we teach extraordinary math and science students.

Many younger students would like to explore the area around the school, but are afraid to do so. The younger students also want to try small research projects but we have no space or money for complicated experiments. The river and the nearby piers provide a wide open area for them to be trained and to explore their own interests. Yesterday, for example, we collected small shrimp and watched their heart beat to distribute their "blood-like" substance. Cool!

My Project

The resources we are requesting will provide an opportunity for hundreds of students to be involved in a river water monitoring project. We have just begun to take the students out this month and have already reached almost a hundred students in collaboration with the Hudson River Trust. Next year we will provide even more water activities and serve hundreds more. The students post their data online and we are sending reports to the Department of Environmental Conservation. This equipment will help the students monitor dissolved oxygen levels which are a vital component of water ecology.

Science training has many components, but an important part is excitement.

This project allows us to bring excitement to the study of local environments and to allow students to explore their interests in a safe and exciting context. Their data is compiled daily and will provide ever more interesting points of departure for the students as trends and details are examined.
