Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are enthusiastic learners, who love to find out "why": "Why do jellyfish have no backbones?" They often compete for the use of the computers, which, to their dismay, are outdated and freeze or shut down during use. We need a laptop and memory cards so they can find answers on their own.
My students are a diverse group of 5-year-old children, who come from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
They share their newly-acquired knowledge on topics with their Reading Buddies, first graders who have been through my program and who continue to build on their prior knowledge independently each day. I want to enable my students to harness their eagerness to learn new facts and apply them in different situations by empowering them as learners via various media, including, but not limited to the world-wide web, writing and movie-making software.
I envision them doing research on animals, both modern and prehistoric, printing their research, testing-out hypotheses about how animals move and adapt to their environments, as well as extinction theories, and recording their research on the built-in camera, to be shared with their reading buddies ad other students,as we are all part of a learning community.
My Project
I envision a technology-based non-fiction unit of study, whereby, each year, new students would have access to resources that would allow them to search, print, write, edit, produce diagrams, video re-enactments, and presentations. This would also carry over into the school-wide enrichment units of study, during which I would facilitate student research and production of a web page related to their research. Having a working HP laptop computer, along with memory cards, paper, and writeable discs would engage students and empower them to produce an end-product of their research on present-day and prehistoric animals.
Inspiring students to love learning and to integrate technology into their daily lives makes education relevant to children.
Thinking long-term, providing students with both the skills and resources to grow, becoming more-prepared to be part of a technology-based global economy, is a goal well-served by the ideas presented in this project.
