I am a middle school math teacher in a high-needs school in New York. I teach 100 7th grade students every week. Our school serves 1,849 students. We have a very diverse population in which 10% are African American, 34% are Hispanic or Latino, 52% are Asian, or other Pacific Islanders and 4% are white . We are a high-need community in which 100% of our population qualifies for free lunch.
I am a traveling teacher and it is very difficult to set up a presentation going from one classroom to the next. Most of my students need the visual representation to understand the math concepts I am presenting to them. If I had a Hewlett Packard mini laptop I could travel from room to room and quickly set up and get my students to work. We would not lose any valuable class time writing the questions and word problems on the board. My students are already at a disadvantage with their math skills and any extra time I can dedicate to teaching them the necessary math concepts is indispensable.
A Hewlett Packard netbook will allow my students to dedicate their class time to learning the math skill that they desperately need. Since I teach pre-algebra, which is the first time most of these students are learning abstract math, the use of the computer as a manipulative is important. It will allow me to show multiple examples quickly to address the various learning styles of my students. Please assist me in providing this resource to my students.
Your donation of a Hewlett Packard computer will make it possible for my students to address their different learning styles in learning a very abstract concept in pre-algebra.
