How Well Does Your Sun Screen Work? Watch Those Rays!

My students need UV probes to conduct science experiments for atmospheric conditions and a sand table to build watersheds for environmental science concepts.

My Students

My students are hungry to learn the basic concepts of science and they really need to have materials that will help them to grasp these. We have been learning about watersheds and discovering that what we do does affect those around us. It's hard to understand this unless you have something to see.

We are eager, middle school inner city students who have nothing in their room to learn science with.

Everything in this school is ancient (except for us) and we need to bring in materials that will assist us with learning. Even the textbooks are really old, and most of the required ones are long gone or disintegrated. The best way to learn science is by doing it and that's just what we want to do! We have a 102-year-old slate chalkboard in our room and that's about all we have, unless you include the old desks and none of these are really conducive to learning real science.

My Project

We are so excited to have the opportunity to create science projects. Using the probes, we can do things like discover which sunscreen provides the best protection for our skin. The best part about these probes is that they don't need constant replacement. Once you have it, you have it. The sand table is so we can create watersheds inside it and learn how to manage resources. We are surrounded by the Great Lakes and this is a wonderful way to recreate what we might not be able to see. It is also much less costly than renting a jet and flying overhead to get an idea what one really looks like! This is also a non-consumable resource, and the only thing I need to get will be play sand!

Your donations will make the lives of children change for the better.

Once a student can actually visualize what it is the he is learning and how it affects him personally, he is changed for life. Giving these students a chance to learn something that will not only become life skills for him, but could also give him a career path will be life changing for them. Your donation can make this happen! Consider helping them step outside their present life and take a turn for the better! You can do it!
