My Students

My students are second graders in a small elementary. This is a middle-class neighborhood, deemed semi-rural even though the city proper has nearly 40,000 people. That means my children tell me about their chickens and horses as well as their hoverboards and gymnastics lessons. They are taught to be hard-working and dependable, family traits that translate well to school. Our school has teachers who are teaching the children of their former students, creating a family-feeling school culture.

These children come from varying socio-economic levels, so their access to technology at home also varies.

My Project

My students get stuck depending on their fingers for even simple math fact work. They even believe that the reason we practice is because we need to get faster at using our fingers to count.

I want my students to be able to do double- and triple-digit addition and subtraction without having to stop to do basic math fact checking.

I want them to have the automaticity that comes with being truly numerate. With these VersaTiles, they will be able to practice and learn and love math.

Math skills are essential in life. Computers and calculators will eventually be doing the work of calculating for my students, but they will still need to understand which numbers and operations to use to get to the right place.
