Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school has students from Pre-K through 6th grade. Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We also have a high English Language Learner population. Many of our students come from immigrant families and speak a second language at home. My students come from hardworking families, often with parents working multiple jobs to make ends meet.

I would love to provide my students with the skills to be financially literate from an early age, so they understand the value of money, and develop a respect their parents hard earned resources.

Many students in my class struggle with basic mathematics, and feel that they are not 'math people'. I would like the right tools, as an educator to break this 'myth', and prove to them that persevering and making mistakes is what will make them better in math.

My Project

It's painful to see how students at a young age give up on Math. I'd like more professional development and professional resources on strengthening my students' mindset towards math.

I want to inspire and boost math achievement in my students by learning the latest neuroscientific research on the best methods by which students learn math.

I am requesting funding to take two online courses by Jo Boaler, a Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University. The courses 'How to Learn Math for Teachers' and 'Mathematical Mindsets' will help me learn how to create a safe and mathematically rich classroom environment, engaging my students in problem-solving, financial literacy, critical thinking, and academically strengthening activities.

The professional learning books I have requested will help me acquire the skills to teach my students financial literacy and how to make sense of mathematics, and better manage their finances, as they enter their teenage years.
