I am the school librarian for a campus of three high schools in Brooklyn. For a decade, our campus had no library or librarian, and the space was left to fester. Now, I have been brought in to bring the space back to life once our renovation is done.
Our students are bright, hard-working, and in need of engaging material.
In preparation for our new normal, I am creating a library of video tutorials for students and teachers to utilize in their classes that encompass literacy skills. We also will be running clubs virtually this year, so that students have access to social interaction with peers regardless of whether school is remote, hybrid, or in-person.
My Project
This program is designed to empower our students in the virtual learning environment. This project was actually born out of student request. Our students have felt incredibly overwhelmed and ill-equipped to engage in the virtual learning environment. Students want ways to feel as though they know what they are doing in this new model of learning, and many are new to the realm of digital literacy. Many students were accustomed to coming to see the librarian on their lunch and after school to walk them through technical tasks and help with using computers, and with the librarian over their shoulder. When new technologies were rapidly thrown at them, the librarian was not able to lean over and point things out or model them. This program is geared toward closing this gap.
The program will consist of several tutorials, recorded, captioned, and then shared on Google Classroom.
These tutorials will be based on digital literacy skills deemed necessary in virtual learning.
The reasons for choosing an asynchronous method of transmission are that we’ve noticed that our students who are distance learning tend to access services at all hours, and students like video tutorials because they can play them over and over again. Multiple times during the spring semester, the librarian received messages at two or three in the morning from students via the library Discord or email, asking for help or reaching out for support. While this probably will continue in the fall, it is the hope of this librarian that this video programming will make things easier on the students.
