This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Providing snacks to bilingual students who are new to the United States is more than just a kind gesture—it’s an essential support tool that impacts their success on multiple levels. These students are not only adjusting to a new language and educational system, but many also face the added pressure of coming from low-income households where consistent access to food is not guaranteed.

Hunger can significantly hinder a student’s ability to learn.

When a child is hungry, it becomes harder to focus, participate in class, and retain new information—especially when lessons are taught in a language they are still learning. Snacks help fuel their bodies and minds, making it easier for them to stay engaged throughout the school day and during after-class activities.

Additionally, snacks offer emotional comfort. For a student who may feel out of place in a new country, food can be a small but powerful source of consistency and care. When a school provides snacks, it sends a message: “You belong here, and we care about you.” This simple act builds trust and helps students feel more connected to their school community.

Finally, offering snacks also reduces the financial strain on families. For low-income parents trying to provide for their children, knowing their child is receiving a healthy snack at school is one less worry.

In short, snacks offer critical nourishment, emotional reassurance, and a sense of belonging. For bilingual students navigating an unfamiliar world, something as small as a snack can open the door to bigger opportunities.
