Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I did not know how things worked when I first came, from the most basic things to the biggest." -an alumnus, speaking about his immigrant experience

Our school is a Ninth-Twelfth grade neighborhood public high school in a very large urban Midwestern district.

All of our students are Latino, and all of them come from low income families. Many are English Language Learners (ELL). Some have come to our country very recently and are still trying to get their feet on the ground emotionally and academically. Like many schools, we have limited resources, with a very limited number of textbooks and computers shared with the entire school. Despite these barriers, our students are enthusiastic learners who are excited about gaining STEM skills, from science lab techniques to computer programming skills. Our district is one of the first in the nation to require ALL high school students to take a Computer Science course for graduation. Because of this, many of our ELL students are now considering careers in they would not have once considered, and several have recently graduated college with STEM degrees.

My Project

In this STEM project, students will research the local environment to see how humans impact their local environment.

Using the DJI Mavic Air drone, students will take photos one square mile of our city immediately surrounding our school to calculate what percentage of the area has greenspace, as the albedo (reflectivity) of the area.

This data will be compared with data from a rural area just an hour away from the school to determine whether we live in an "urban heat island".

Students will explore how technology has changed the way we live. We will study technologies and engineering projects that have been used to address these concerns. Using state of the art technological tools for Math and Science is a very important experience for students to have in their academic careers. I want to ensure that our low-income urban students have the same opportunities to succeed as other students. Will you help?
