My Students

I teach at a specialized math and science high school in New York City. Students must take an entrance exam even though it is a public school. The students of my school are so inquisitive, and have such a drive to learn, This is evident when looking at their full schedules and packed after school activities. These are some of the best and brightest students in all of New York City, and they make going to work every day a JOY!

My Project

Many of the students in my school will go into careers in science, but most have only been exposed to medicine, engineering, or research as a possibility.

I have spent the last few years building an environmental program at my school, so students can see that there are other fields of study.

This project will give some students their first hands-on experience in studying the nature that surrounds our city and the effects humans are having on it.

It is these types of experiences that the students will remember years after their high school years end. Activities include: traveling upstate, camping for a weekend while completing stream surveys, on a hike, to compare to the water by our school, and learning to complete transverse studies in the forest to determine biodiversity levels. To do this we need measuring tapes to accurately delineate the survey area, tree ID books to identify the trees in our area, and microfiber towels to keep the equipment dry. And, we need water thermometers.
