Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want to make learning math more interesting and inspiring for my students who attend a low-performing inner-city Los Angeles public high school. As a math teacher to over two-hundred students each year, majority of my students begin the school year "afraid" and "bored" of math. I try to counter their negative perceptions of mathematics by inspiring students to think of mathematics as a language and a gateway to a whole new world of possibilities. I often include real-world problems in my lessons by delivering activities that students find engaging - lessons on running a clothing business, maximizing profit, discovering impedance of electricity using imaginary numbers, mathematically determining whether Kobe can make a shot using quadratic functions, and discovering the disease rate (exponential decay) of a "village of sick m&ms.
For many of my students, they will be the first in their family to attend college. Most of the students at my high school are in some form of foster care and have not had experiences with adults who are engineers, doctors, or scientists. I am a proponent of opportunities and I use my classroom to motivate students to explore the possibilities of college and a career. I often engage students by having them do partner and group work but this requires supplies and materials that I do not often receive from my school. This is why I am turning to Donors Choose to ask for help in securing materials for my students.
This flipbook project requires students to make a mini-book on systems of equations and inequalities, a tough and difficult but important concept to master. I find that students are more willing to take on a difficult math challenge if given a visual and creative way to learn it. Students must solve word problems such as, "the turtle and rabbit race" and "how many t-shirts?" by graphing linear functions using slope/x-intercepts/y-intercepts, determining feasible regions of inequalities and maximizing profit points. This lesson requires materials, some of which I have but most I do not. The flipbook is made up of 5 sheets of legal-sized colored paper with graph paper cut out and pasted into the book as needed. Students will use pencil, colored pencils, and markers to write out and solve word problems into the book. Graphs also need to be color coded as well. Overhead transparency papers are used as manipulatives for students to master the overlap of shaded regions of systems of inequalities. I will create handouts to print out with instructions and problems for students to use for the activity.
Without donors like you, my students' fears of math being "boring" and their questions of "when will I ever use this math?" will become a reality if I am forced to teach from a textbook all day everyday. It is simple projects like flipbooks that allow me to give the most challenging math questions that reflect real-life problems and engage the students at the same time. As a teacher for ten years at this high school, I have learned that students will stretch their minds and learn higher-level concepts if they are hands-on and take ownership in their learning. These interactions and experiences are necessary to master the standards for the course. With your donation for these supplies, I can continue to provide activities that incorporate my students' learning needs. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal and I hope you find it worthwhile to donate the materials for my students.
