Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

With Speed Stacks Cups, my students will have the opportunity to release their built up energy in a positive and constructive way. I am currently the special education teacher in a collaborative team teaching setting in New York. I work with a general education teacher and we have a paraprofessional who works one on one with one of our students. We have 20 fifth graders, and half of them are classified as students with special needs. My school is in a low-income community and the majority of my students qualify for free and reduced price lunch. Most of my classroom resources I have had to supply myself. Although my school works to educate each and every child in our building, the lack of resources negatively impacts our students’ learning experiences.

An obstacle that my students face is the lack of appropriate activities for them during their lunch and recess time. During the warm months in New York, my students go outside and play on a fenced in blacktop area. There are no play structures for them to climb on, nor is any sports equipment supplied for them to play with. What ends up happening is that our students chase after each other and start fights at recess. During the winter months, our students are not allowed to go outside at all for recess. Instead, they sit in a hot auditorium and sometimes watch movies, and other times just sit and wait for 20 minutes until their teachers pick them up. This leads to my students returning to the classroom after lunch with an excess of energy. Because my students are riled up after recess, it makes teaching in the afternoon difficult. My students have a hard time focusing and therefore they are not able to learn as well as if they had been able to get rid of some of their energy during recess.

In order to give my students a positive activity to participate in during their recess time, I want to introduce Speed Stacks Cups to my students. In order to do this, I will need 5 sets of the Speed Stacks cups and an instructional DVD. The DVD will be used to demonstrate how the Speed Stacks Cups are used. My students will be able to use the sets of cups to practice stacking the cups. There are many different patterns that can be used to stack the cups. Also, after the students have been able to practice the various patterns, they will be able to compete against each other to see who can stack the cups the fastest. This activity will benefit my students by providing them with a nonviolent, interesting, and challenging way to use their excess energy. Speed Stacks cups can also help build students' hand-eye coordination. I hope that this activity will give my students something to look forward to in the middle of the day. I also hope that my students will learn the importance of practice and patience when learning a new skill. This knowledge is especially important for my students as they are learning new things in the classroom every day.

With your help, I hope to give my students something to look forward to every day. I hope to teach my students how they can focus their energy in a positive way to learn something new. By supplying my students with these Speed Stacks cups, you will give them the opportunity to use their energy in a positive way. This will allow them to be more focused after recess during instructional time in the afternoon. My students will learn a new skill while learning the larger lesson, that learning takes hard work and practice. You can help teach my students this important lesson.
