How Drinking Hurts Our Thinking, Part 2

My students need traffic signs, a bean bag toss game, a ball transfer game, and an Abuse Booze and Lose display to teach them how drinking hurts our thinking.

My Students

The goal of my health class is to inspire students to make good choices for lifelong health. My biggest challenge is making them understand that if they engage in risky behaviors, there WILL be consequences. We study alcohol for four weeks each year, and we need references beyond our text books.

We are a Title I school as well as a California Distinguished School and a Schools To Watch Model Middle School.

My students are used to working hard and rising to the challenges they face. They enjoy learning and demonstrating their knowledge in unconventional ways, and they really shine when they have access to a variety of resources! The success they achieve in meeting my high standards motivates them to work even harder, then they achieve even more success. It's a great cycle, especially because healthy habits will make a lifelong impact!

My Project

My students need hands-on activities that demonstrate how drinking alcohol reduces the ability to think clearly. The traffic signs will be used to create an obstacle course for my students to walk through, first with and then without the impairing effects of alcohol vision goggles. The bean bag toss game and ball transfer game will also be completed both with and without alcohol vision goggles. My students will learn that once their senses are dulled, their ability to accomplish simple tasks is greatly diminished. Finally, the Abuse Booze and Lose display will remind my students that opening a bottle could create a host of physical, psychological, and social problems.

It is my hope that these activities will help keep my students alcohol-free by allowing them to experience how challenging it is to think and complete tasks while under the influence of alcohol.

Together, these resources will create an integral part of our Substance Abuse curriculum, and their impact will be widespread! Thank you for supporting student learning and lifelong health!
