How Does Our Garden Grow?

My students need gardening equipment to successfully cultivate our school garden and digital cameras to document our progress.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Borremans's classroom raised $1,095

My Students

My amazing students are passionate, hard-working, and eternally curious! They live in a very small, rural community where freshly grown, healthy food is not always readily accessible. They also have a passion for taking care of their community and our planet by reducing the amount of garbage our school puts into landfills by reusing, recycling, and composting as much waste as possible. They want to make the plants we grow and compost we make available to the whole community. We are a Title I school with very limited additional resources.

My Project

A school garden is the perfect way to get students involved in healthy eating from the ground up. My students are so passionate about learning how to grow their own food, using recyclable materials to build our garden, and composting organic food scraps from our cafeteria. They are 100% involved in everything from designing our school garden space and redesigning and building the hoophouse to deciding what and how to plant the food and taking care of the composting. We use science, math, and language arts in all aspects of our gardening experience. As the 5th grade students learn how to work the garden they will become the teachers! Other classes, parents, and even community members will be able to come to our garden and learn how to plant their own gardens, build a hoop house, and what and how to compost. In this project, the students learn how to analyze the soil, which plants grow best together, which plants attract pollinators and other helpful insects as well as which can be harmful. They are learning about environmental factors and how they influence our world, they use math and engineering in the designing of the hoop house, planter boxes and beds, and the fencing that protects the garden. The digital cameras will be used to document and track our progress. Your generous donations will give these amazing, passionate students the materials they need to really be the world changers they want to be!
