How Does Our Garden Grow? With Your Help, Of Course!

My students need gardening tools so that they may continue creating a perennial garden, a vegetable garden, and beautifying the area surrounding our school.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. D'Amato's classroom raised $445

My Students

I am a gym teacher in Brooklyn, and I run a Gardening Club for students that meets Monday-Thursday for 45 minutes each day. I have always planted and done clean-ups with my students, but this is the first year that I have an organized club that meets on a regular basis.

The Gardening Club is made up of about 15 kids ranging from 3rd to 5th grade.

(I say "about" because some members must split their time between gardening and an academic club because they need additional academic support) We are mainly working on the green spaces along the perimeter of the school, as well as in our courtyard, and have made a lot of progress since school started in September. We have pulled up weeds and grass in order to plant a perennial garden. We have mulched huge areas in order to beautify and help with our maintenance. We have learned about and planted countless tulip and daffodil bulbs, which will be a real treat this Spring, and countless Springs to follow.

My Project

The way we were able to obtain huge quantities of mulch, bulbs, gloves, and various tools was through grants which the school had previously received. At this point the grants have run out, and we are in need of more supplies. Some of the tools that the school had have broke through normal usage, and in some cases we never had enough. I have requested rakes, brooms, dustpans, and gardening shears. I have all hands on deck, but a lot of the time I don't have enough materials for every child to be able to work at the same time.

With your help we will be able to continue our gardening efforts.

Now that it is winter we get outside when we can, but we are mostly working in the classroom now, learning all that we can about different plants, fruits, and vegetables, making posters about the environment, and planning our next steps. Green spaces in Brooklyn can be few and far - please help us keep ours and make it even better.
