My Spanish 4 students will be learning how to write memoirs about an injustice that they have suffered in their lives and how they have overcome them. We will read Rigoberta's story and use it as a model. Like my students she learned Spanish as a second language; so I think this will allay my students' fears that they can't write a memoir in their second language.

I teach Spanish 4 which is composed of 11th graders at our school. Our vision is to create a generation of community leaders who know how to advocate for themselves and others. I teach Spanish a tool for creating positive change. I am explicit in this goal. Students are constantly asked to reflect on the language as an instrument of change.
The majority of the students are in Spanish 4 as Heritage Learners, meaning that they have experience speaking Spanish at home. Many of them are from immigrant families that have left their countries because of economic struggle and political instability. Therefore, they have demonstrated interest in learning about political themes and resistance movements.
We need the book "Me Llamo Rigoberta Menchu y asi me nacio la conciencia." Menchu is an indigenous woman who lived through the Guatemalan civil war. She was illiterate and only spoke her native Mayan language. She learned Spanish in order to write this book about her experience and share it with the Spanish-speaking world. I think students will read this book and get inspiration for writing their own memoirs about injustices their families have suffered and how they've dealt with them.
You will make it possible for my students to write memoirs about significant challenges in their lives IN SPANISH!
I think this will be a truly empowering experience.
