Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Third graders in a New York public school who go home to a house, apartment or shelter that has no books, research materials or dictionaries. This high-achieving third grade class in an extremely low-income community is made up of students who want to do well and want to learn as much as they can, but have little to no resources to do so.
This is a classroom with twenty-five students, but only ten dictionaries. Our school follows the Teacher's College Writer's Workshop model, so every child is expected to complete numerous drafts for each writing assignment. The second and third steps of the writing process - revising and editing - involve incorporating new words and doing a spell-check. But, with twenty-five students and only ten dictionaries, this process is drawn out and leaves dictionary-less kids bored as they wait for one to free up.
By having fifteen more dictionaries in our classroom, all students can have one at their desk as they work on their writing. With constant access to a dictionary, my students will improve their vocabulary on a daily basis. With the proper amount of dictionaries, our writing projects will move along much more smoothly and quickly, and our class can complete more writing projects throughout the year.
Your donation will make it possible for all twenty five of my students to work independently on their writing at the same time. This donation will improve student vocabulary, student writing, and student progress (and SUCCESS!) over the year as we complete numerous writing projects!
