Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever been irritated by noisy and overly bright environments? My students experience this everyday and are unable to filter out these sometimes painful distractors. Sensory overloads like these lead to frustration and meltdowns. Sensory resources help limit these distractions.
My students have multiple disabilities and attend a large school.
Most are second language learners and come from low-income households. I teach students who experience sensory overload from their environment and need additional support tools to minimize distractors. With Autism on the rise, I am finding it more difficult to meet my students' individual needs without specialized resources.
My Project
I am requesting multiple sensory resources to help my students decrease environmental distractions and allow them to better focus during classroom instruction. The filter shades will diffuse the fluorescent lighting in the classroom. Students with disabilities need internal regulation and the metronome will provide that support.
The Mozart CD collection and scented oils will help set the mood during various activities. All of these resources will support my students in the classroom by helping them self-regulate and focus during work time.
Giving students with special needs the tools and resources they need to improve focus, minimize sensory overload, and self-regulate is vital to the learning process.
Children who have sensory processing disorders are unable to filter out many environmental distractions their typical peers easily ignore. Providing these tools can make the difference between successful learning opportunities and meltdowns.
