Our high school school is an urban high-needs small school school currently located within an existing, under-performing school. This is our second year, but we hope to expand to a 6-12 school with an emphasis on international affairs. I am currently the only language teacher, teaching 9th and 10th French and ESL, since French is the language of diplomacy.
Many people consider learning language to be a luxury, but research has come to show that learning a second language can enhance the learning of other subjects. My students are eager to learn French, but simply lack the basic necessities to learn it. We currently have 8 paperback dictionaries at various stages of falling apart to serve over 30 students. Your help will enable students to be empowered express themselves and go onto be our future diplomats, ambassadors and world-wide citizens.
I'm looking for a class set of hard cover dictionaries that will enable the students to work collaborative to find new words when they work on creative projects to express themselves in French. Though some might say dictionary use is archaic, I'm empowering the students to have the right tools to take language learning beyond the classroom walls.
The sad truth is that most of the students are plugging in chunks of text to a translator and coming up with unintelligible "French" phrases. I'm trying to give them the tools to become masters of the language - they don't need to know every word, just how to access the words they need. Please help these students become the future ambassadors for America!
