How do Primate Skulls Measure Up?

Help me give my students tools for comparative anatomy. This chimpanzee skull and book will guide them in comparing their own skull and teeth to that of other hominids.

My Project

Hominid evolution is a fascinating topic that keeps all of my students excited to learn more, year after year. We look at the history of civilization as far back as we can identify hominid evolution.

Every human has a skull, but how is it different from that of a chimpanzee?

Understanding the physical differences between human and chimpanzee skulls gives students a better understanding of why our bodies are built the way they are.

We have a replica human skull, but with a replica chimpanzee skull, my sixth-grade students will be able to work collaboratively, using calipers to measure the cranium size to infer the size of the brain case. They will use it to measure tooth size and shape to see how our diet has changed. It will also help them notice specific changes in facial structure. The fun book about teeth will point out differences in teeth for a variety of species and diets. Students will collaborate throughout this inquiry-based lab where they will hone in on their scientific analysis and communication skills.
