My students need hands-on literacy materials, such as a sight-word sentence center, pop and read games, sight-word sentence board, and instant literacy centers.
My students are primarily African-American and Hispanic. They come to school eager to learn each day, and are excited to see what their day has in store for them.
I teach at a Title I school in Illinois, where 100% of the students receive free and reduced priced lunch.
Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can, so they can be successful one day.
My Project
My students have a requirement to read one book each night. The problem is that my parents do not know how to explicitly help their child learn to read and some are unable to help their children. I want to hold a Literacy day for kindergarten, in which parents can come in and help their children complete some reading activities in a non-threatening environment. These activities will allow children to show their parents all the great things they are learning and will allow parents to learn some new ways to help their children at home.
The best way to learn is through exploration, but many of my children do not get that opportunity outside of school.
The Literacy centers cover all of our standards for the entire year and would introduce parents to vocabulary such as beginning sounds, ending sounds, vowels, and CVC words. Parents can help their children segment beginning or ending sounds with the instant centers. They will be able to see why those sounds are important when they help their children write CVC words. Parents would be able to learn what these terms mean and how to help their children with homework that involves these concepts.
The Literacy day would allow parents to see why and how we teach sight words and how their children can use them in writing. They will be able to use the two sight word writing centers to see how children begin to learn to write and will be able to help in the same way at home. Students will be able to use the storytelling box to use sight words I will be educating students, as well as educating parents during this day. The materials gained from this project will be available for check-out for parents and students to play at
