My classroom is a collection of significantly diverse learners who each have very special qualities requiring 1:1 to 1:3 instruction in the areas of academics, functional skills, behavioral skills, and social skills. The majority of my students require frequent sensory breaks and lack communication skills needed to express their wants and needs. Noises can be difficult so having a calming environment is beneficial to them and hands on learning if beneficial.
My classroom consists of 12 wonderfully, energetic students with Autism in both kindergarten and 1st grade.
My students are sensory driven and deserve to have their needs met in a safe environment. All of my students come from a low socio-economic background, so they often have difficulties acquiring therapeutic items which help fulfill their sensory needs. More than 50% of the population receives free school lunch.
My Project
My students feel different emotions that they do not understand or even know how to communicate how they are feeling. This project would provide me with several activities to help my kids understand their emotions and books to read furing social skills instruction to give them those skills. This project centers on on small group learning, books, and activities that help students to practice how to handle their emotions and understand what those emotions are.

Many kids have difficulty with self-regulating their emotions, especially children with Autism. They struggle to communcate how they are feeling, what the difference in emotions are and how to relay which emotion they are feeling. I would love to be able to provide my students with the opportunity to learn how to understand their emotions through our social skills centers. The materials in this project will help to ensure that I can provide my students with the opportunities and teach them the skills to better understand their emotion.
