My Project
For millennia, humans have created all kinds of artwork using a wide variety of materials and techniques to achieve their artistic goals and respond to the world around them-- have you ever wondered what it would be like to create art the way they did? What’s it like to paint a fresco or weave a basket? How do you make a pot? How did they make paint? Have you ever wondered about the connections between the artist and the objects they make? Sometimes art history can seem antiquated and disconnected from art-making, these materials will make it come to life for my inquisitive and creative students!
Hands-On Art History and The Arts and Crafts Movement are two different classes where students can deep-dive into the creative physical work behind the art history lessons and learn to design and create their own well-crafted handmade objects in today's throwaway culture.
The Arts and Crafts Movement class is based on a late 19th century design philosophy that championed handcrafted, high-quality items over mass-produced ones and valued the craftsmanship of handmade objects, promoting a connection between the artist and the materials they used. As well as learning about this history, students will explore fiber arts, dyeing, bookbinding, ceramics, polymer clay miniatures, and more. Hands-On Art History students will explore a wide variety of media based in an art historical context including fresco painting, paint mixing, ceramics, Asian calligraphy, Cherokee basketmaking, printmaking, paper making and more. This class will study a variety of styles and techniques from other cultures and multiple time periods and apply that knowledge to a physical project based in art history. These specialized supplies will open new doors that connect my students to the humanity, history, science and skill behind the creation of art throughout time.
