This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a high school in a high needs, urban district, with 76% of students meeting the free and reduced lunch requirements. Our challenge is to bring them to nature or if necessary, bring nature to them.
My students want engaging, hands on learning opportunities and I want to give them as many as possible.
AP Environmental Science is only in its second year but we've tripled our original enrollment! This means to me that our students want to be challenged to explore the global community, analyze the issues, and explore solutions. Everyone can do something to bring our world into a sustainable future.
My Project
Our students need to explore the world around them. Nature is available even in urban environments! This testing lab provides a hands on learning opportunity. It will provide pre-college lab experience. They will have to work as collaborative team members. Our students have the opportunity to sample a freshwater source and identify any contaminants.
Our neighborhood stream is connected to the Hudson River and connects us to the world around us .
This highlights the thread throughout the Environmental Science class that we all have to work towards a sustainable future and that there is no such thing as "away".
