How Can We Learn on an Empty Stomach?

Help me give my students breakfast and lunch options such as breakfast sandwiches, cereal, and ramen soups to help fill their stomachs when they are hungry.

My Project

Each day we strive to teach through a multitude of modalities. My classroom predominantly consists of emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and intellectually disabled students, however, we never let their disabilities define them or stand in their way. Within our classroom, we always set the bar high and expect nothing but greatness.

You wake up late, didn't eat dinner the night before, and now are rushing off to school.

You finally arrive at school, but your stomach is growling. How do you manage to focus? You don't! How do we solve this problem? We provide our students with a snack to hold them over.

Our school is located in a low socio-economic community. Many of our students come to school hungry. We need to find a way to fill their stomachs so they can rise to their greatest potential. Having classrooms stocked with small individual snacks, allows students to come in, grab a snack and continue on their day without causing a huge distraction to the other students in the room.

My students face daily struggles. Academic deficits are part of the struggles they face, but not the only issue. Many of our students need additional nutrition and nurturing. We try to always have snacks available for students, but many times we purchase snacks from our own funds. It is hard for many students to concentrate, now add a growling stomach to the mix, and it makes focusing next to impossible.

If we have breakfast snacks available such as breakfast sandwiches, Pop Tarts, and cereal, we could provide our students with something to help hold them over until lunch time. This will ensure they are participating during class and completing assignments. By helping us provide "hold me overs" such cup-o-soups with bowls and spoons, we can hopefully help fill their stomachs and keep them energized in the classroom.
