How Can We Learn On An Empty Stomach?

My Students

You wake up late, didn't eat dinner the night before, and now are rushing off to school. You finally arrive at school, but your stomach is growling. How do you manage to focus? You don't! How do we solve this problem? We provide our students with a snack to hold them over.

My students consist of 6th, 7th and 8th graders that attend Science within a self-contained classroom.

Our school is located with a low socio-economic community. Many of our students come to school hungry. We need to find a way to fill their stomachs so they can rise to their greatest potential. Having classrooms stocked with small individual snacks, allows students to come in, grab a snack and continue on their day without causing a huge distraction to the other students within the room.

My Project

My students face daily struggles. Academic deficits are part of the struggles they face, but not the only issue. Many of our students need additional nutrition and nurturing. We try to always have snacks available for students, but many times we purchase snacks from our own funds. It is hard for many students to concentrate, now add a growling stomach, and it makes focusing, next to impossible. If we have snacks within the classroom, we could provide our students with a snack to help hold them over until lunch time. By helping us provide snacks such as Frito Lays variety pack, Sunchips variety pack, and Goldfish, our students will have an assortment of snacks to choose from, to hopefully fill their empty stomachs.

We try to always have snacks available for students, but many times we purchase snacks from our own funds.

The expense is growing more and more each month, and it seems like more and more students are arriving to school with empty stomachs. Funding this project would greatly help with our growing food bill and would fill many empty stomachs.
