Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a small learning community of 2nd and 3rd graders. Some need a quiet and small setting; while others have processing disorders or delays; and some just need a safe place, where they feel that their teacher believes in them. Despite of all these challenges, my students want to learn!

My school is located in a very high needs area.

The majority of our students are language learners; first generation Americans; and many are eligible for the free or reduced lunch program. We also happen to be located in area of known gang activity. Therefore our school provides a safe place for our students. Besides being a place to learn, we provide after school care with enrichment activities; we have community building events, such as Fall Carnival, Winter Program, and Astronomy Nights, to name just a few. My own classroom is a small learning community of students who need extra support in a non-general education setting. Students in my class typically need extra time or extra review but they are very motivated to learn--just simply at their own pace and at their own level!

My Project

The motivation and inspiration for my computer program project came from last year's experience with the global movement, "Hour of Code". A fellow teacher mentioned it and I decided to try it out. All I can say is that whole week during of "Hour of Code" was so amazing! I saw my students in a whole different light that week. We followed the suggested lesson plans and all my students were so engaged and motivated to learn the coding language. I was so proud of them and impressed how quickly they could "code". I wanted to continue this learning after the week had ended. In order to properly support and motivate my students in their introductory lessons to coding, it is essential that we have access to our own digital devices. Currently, we have very outdated netbooks that need constant updating and frankly are not able to handle all the applications and online tools that we need to continue our learning.

Being able to have access to our own digital devices, means that we will have more time learning about computer programming and having more time to practice these skills.

The addition of having Chromebooks, along with headphones, will provide my students with an opportunity to explore a possible future career in the computer sciences or even in the math, science, engineering, and technology field. I want to build upon the momentum and motivation that I have in my classroom right now!
