Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are the geniuses of "the NOW" that are often under-served within the Houston community. They are the bright lights shining within our lives. They are intelligent thinkers, many of whom speak two languages. Overachievers, who rise above all odds and find reason to win despite the "cards that they were dealt". They are modern day historians, with vast cultural awareness. Astronomers and Artists. Horticulturalists and Educators. SURVIVORS! My students are citizens of this world and universe, powerful beyond measure. They are the TRUE champions, who I applaud daily!
All students deserve the necessary resources to achieve greatness within the realm of institutional learning, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
My campus is comprised of roughly 40 educators and 400 dreamers and believers, in which over 95% receive free or reduced lunch. Many students dine with their campus family after school, oftentimes their only meals for the evening.
As many great educators and coaches have instilled everlasting faith in order for me to find my success, so I extend this letter to you to offer the gift of giving - in order to nurture the success of today's young minds and talents. I humbly thank you in advance.
My Project
We have started this school year ,largely, with donations from staff, teachers, and community members - mostly crayons, a few sets of markers, some scissors and pencils. Thankfully we had a few rolls of paper that were provided by our custodial staff to begin the first week of lessons. Some art supplies and donations continue to come in as our visual arts program unfolds. Our students will use these supplies to remain engaged, explore, diligently place effort for sharing their world through their eyes!
Your generosity will make a huge difference in the lives of my students by allowing them to continue to fulfill the greatest right we as Americans have - the freedom to creatively share our thoughts, opinions, beliefs and individuality through self-expression.
As art programs, as well as art budgets, continue to see a decrease in support and funding across the country, there remains a dire need for students to see the connection between their physical environment and their academic coursework. I stand firm in the belief that exposure to the fine arts has the ability to make this connection and bridge this gap of understanding.
