House Program to Build Character in Junior High Students

Help me give my students needed materials to keep our House Program Running. This includes binders and folders for training, a new sound system, house shirts to be worn on Fridays, house colored balloons, tablecloths, streamers, and signs.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach math to 6th and 7th graders, but my program allows me to interact with every 6th, 7th, and 8th grader on campus. We are a Title I school, with over 70% of our students qualifying for free or reduced priced lunches. Like most schools, our students come to school carrying emotional baggage from their past, and sometimes need instruction on social skills and emotional regulation. Three years ago, we noticed a very small group of our students were experiencing what it feels like to be a part of a team. In the summer of 2016, we changed that by developing the House Program.

The House Program helps our middle school students feel what they most desire: a sense of belonging, and a constant celebration of their achievements.

The House Program we have created gives every single student in middle school the opportunity to be a part of a team. Every student is sorted into a house and earns points for their academic, behavioral, and extra curricular activities. On Fridays, we all come together to celebrate the week, and compete for house points in a competition that highlights all different types of strengths.

My Project

The items we are asking for will help to build unity within the houses. We will be able to train our leaders using the folders and binders we selected, we will run weekly house competitions more effectively with our new sound system, and we will give our students an opportunity to show their team spirit no matter their financial situation with our new house shirts. The materials we selected will keep our program running for years to come without teachers having to reach in their own pockets to fund it.

Through this program, our students learn about honesty to gain trust, imagination to dream big, compassion to work on a team, and courage to have confidence.

Every single student walks away from us in eighth grade with teamwork experience. Since the implementation of this program, we have seen our behavior data, academic data, and school culture data improve with each passing year.
