My Students

Every student has what it takes "to be a maker, a creator or an innovator." ~ Hadi Partovi, co-founder and CEO, Code.org

The over 700 students in grades K-5 at my elementary school are a diverse group of boys and girls from many backgrounds.

We are a Title I public school in a fast-growing county school district that is among the best in Mississippi. Our students have many talents and unique interests that teachers do their best to foster and support. Our school recently introduced computer coding in grades K-5 by having all of our students participate in the 2015 Hour of Code. I coordinated the weeklong event in December and based on student and faculty response, I am coordinating my school's efforts to expand the project. I am the point person helping other teachers to incorporate computer coding into their classrooms. To consistently reach all of our students, we need a set of Chromebooks that teachers can check out for use within their classes.

My Project

This year every one of our K-5 students joined in on the 2015 Hour of Code, the largest education event in history. Students were introduced to the basics of computer coding and are eager to move to the next level. Classroom teachers will be able to check out these 45 Chromebooks and set of headphones to incorporate coding, digital storytelling, and collaboration via Google Apps for Education into their everyday teaching practices, giving students more opportunities to develop the 21st century skills they'll need to succeed when they leave us. Students in grades K-3 will use the Chromebooks and free Code.org courses to learn pattern recognition and sequencing in addition to basic coding, while students in grades 4-5 will use the Chromebooks, advanced Code.org courses, and free Google CS First modules to create their own computer programs and games utilizing higher order thinking skills and collaboration.

Papers and pencils don't engage students they way they used to.

Our students are digital natives who played with their parents' smartphones and tablets before they learned to read and write at school. This is how students learn, and this is how we need to be teaching them. I really believe that using technology is going to be one of the primary skills our students will need in order to find meaningful, high-paying jobs in the 21st Century. Access to this technology is crucial to development.
