My Students

Do you remember doing bacterial transformation labs in college? Well, technology is moving so fast that it has now filtered down to our high school students. My Advanced Placement Biology high school students are attempting this technology now.

It is so exciting to see our students in awe about the labs they will be exercising.

Most of these students come from low income families and have never fathomed being able to perform sophisticated labs as are required by the AP College Board. These students are eager to get their hands on bacterial cultures, enzymatic degradations and lots more. When I introduce to them the idea that they will make bacteria glow like fireflies, I get two reactions from them. Some students have never seen fireflies and aren't sure what I mean and the other half squeal "No way!!! I can't wait." It's this enthusiasm and sense of new discovery that drives them to work really hard at learning all that comes with this very broad and densely packed topic. This year our school has exceeded a population of 3200 students. These particular students are the top of their class. We strive for excellence in hopes that they will join the scientific community and contribute towards our earth's betterment.

My Project

My students have been attempting to make do with the resources we have. Over the past few years, we have created water baths from slow cookers, Bunsen burners and beakers, as well as microwaves and bowls. Well, as creative as we have been, we have had little success. The water bath that we are requesting will allow us to incubate very delicate fragments of DNA at the perfect temperature. We will also be able to heat shock bacteria which will allow the DNA to enter the delicate cells. With this incubator, my expectation is that the bacterial transformations will finally work and students will see that in fact, they too are capable of working with DNA. Since most of these students have not been exposed to bacterial work until this point, this particular lab will serve as a launch point for their interest in biotechnology and genetics. This lab will foster their enthusiasm and guide them into learning about restriction enzymes and cell culturing.

As a community, our schools are working on producing scientists for all walks of life.

Who knows, maybe one of these students will be inspired by these labs to be the one who helps discover a cure for a particular cancer. Giving our students the opportunity to succeed by having the right equipment will help our students gain confidence and self-esteem. By donating to our cause, you may be a direct contributor to the education of our next Martha Hershey or Watson and Crick. Thank you.
