Hot Enough to Fry an Egg?

My students need air-conditioning to make classrooms a bearable temperature for learning.

My Students

Many of my students are on the autism spectrum, some stutter, others have mild to moderate cognitive challenges, but all have some form of language-based disability. It can be tough for them to navigate their education. They need special strategies and resources.

My students are bright, funny, sweet, technology-loving children.

They need extra help to develop their language, social interaction, and life skills. My goal is to target authentic language and give them strategies so they can work around their disabilities – for learning and for happy, successful lives.

My Project

As I type this, I am wearing a t-shirt and shorts in my classroom. I arrived on this, the first day of school, in a crisp new shirt and tie. That didn't last long. My shirt was stained with sweat by second period. I was too uncomfortable. I've given my fans away to classroom teachers who needed them more. Our school doesn't have air-conditioning. It gets unbearably hot. How are students supposed to learn like this?

Can you imagine trying to write an essay while dripping sweat onto your paper?

We wouldn't ask adults in offices to work under these conditions. However, our special needs students and classroom teachers are expected to take the heat – literally.

I am asking for portable air conditioning units. We have to do something to lower the temperatures of our classrooms. It's not reasonable. We're turning to you for help. We can't afford to supply these ourselves. We hope you'll consider supporting us in this goal. We appreciate your time for reading this and your care for public school education. Thank you!
